Finally got back to working on the truck. I fixed my run-on starter problem, and fired the motor (which is freshly rebuilt by me and has'nt been on the road yet). IT started and ran for a few minutes but I noticed I wasn't getting any oil pressure. Shut it off, and added a quart of oil. Went in to crank it and each time it started to find a little compressionand you could tell it was just about to fire, it would stop cranking and spit out a little fuel out of the carb. Basically it sounded like r-r-r-r-r-r-puff! If that makes any sense.
I have not set the timing yet, any thoughts on why it won't fire?
You should determine why it didnt have oil pressure before trying to start it again. What is your best guess as to exactly how long it ran when started up? Did you use assembly lubrication when installing the bearings and other internal components?
Sounds like too much initial timing (or the dist. is not in the correct place, aka "a tooth off"). If the dizzy was left slightly loose in order to set the timing later, they frequently move when the engine is shut off.
I'd be more concerned about the lack of oil pressure....is there NONE at all? Is the oil pump being turned? Are the distributor & drive shaft fully seated? Might solve both problems at once.
When I first fired this motor months ago I primed it with a drill but had it spinning backwards so I blew oil past the seals and onto the floor. But I primed it fired it and since then I've run it a couple of times and it has run for maybe a total of 1hr over the last several months at about 20 minutes at a time. Fine oil pressure no problems. But it has sat for about 3 months and the quart of oil it was down is on the grage floor just below the oil pump- a semi-slow leak, even though it is a brand new pump. I ran it today for a minute or two tops and shut it down because there was no pressure just to be safe. So I put in the quart went to fire it again and that is when it did the spin spin spin puff thing kind of like the timing is just too far out to fire. I think the zero pressure was becuae there was no oil left in the pump and had I run it a little longer it might have pulled up pressure. it is a mechanical gauge and takes a minute or two just to build pressure in the guage.
My machine shop told me to pack the pump with Vaseline so it would prime the pump when I went to start it for the first time. So I did and in doing so I split open the seals. I'm thinking I should just order a new oil pump.
I'm hoping I can get someone over to help me crank the motor while I turn the dizzy. I'm hoping that is all it is. What else could it be?
