i am going to rebuild my '85 efi 302 in the summer. i want to upgrade the cam in it. nothing much, just mild. i don't know if i have a mechanical flat tappet, hydraulic flat tappet, mechanical roller or any other type of cam. the haynes manual i have says something about a swapover in '85 so i don't know if my truck was included. please tell me what type of cam i need to order.
im sure its a hydraulic flat tappet. call compcams be sure to explain that your motor is running speed density efi. this will help them pick the best cam that wont make the computer freak out
okay, thanks. can you explain to me the differences though. i've always wondered. and what is speed density? i've only seen things that refer to speed density on '87 and after trucks.
Summit Racing... www.summitracing.com part # CRN-130052 . I had this cam in my old motor. It is a good cam if you are going to do minor mods to the motor such as intake and headers.
i believe it will work with anything... it has a .484 lift, which means it has a little bit of lope to it.... the rpm range is about 1800-5000, good for the street. I dont think it would be too much for the efi. When i built my motor I had an Edelbrock 600 CFM 4bbl on it and didnt have to do any adjustments to it, it just bolted on... I dont know much about furl injection so....
putting a carb on would make things a lot easier, but i like the efi setup. it doesn't stall out when i'm sideways on a hill or going almost strait up. so is there maybe a milder cam that would work well with the efi or am i just screwed into remaining stock?
what would be the proper springs? that cam says its for the 351w. i've read that the cams will interchange, but since the firing order is different, wont the cam open the wrong valves at the wrong time? plus, i thought about doing a conversion to roller lifters. can you use a flat tappet cam with roller lifters. these lifters are like the ones on '90s mustangs with the guide plates and hold down.
Matt95 L or Kemicalburns - Have you put this cam in before? How did you like it? Was there a noticable difference from stock?
I actually put the CraneCam into my 1986 F-150 302EFI that 1bad73Bronco suggested. I have around 40,000 miles on the engine since I put the cam in. I have had increased problems with my trucks idle and stalling.
If I take it out know and put in the correct cam will my computer respond ok. Or is it messed up from the wrong cam being in there for so long?
