stalling and backfiring

I have a 1969 F350. It has a 390 / 4 bbl, I had let it get really low on fuel and then filled up the tank. I was driving home yesterday when my engine refused to rev. It just kind of chugged and then stopped. I tried to start it and it began to backfire out of my exhust and my carb. I check my inline fuel filter and saw that the gas appeared to be a funky color. Worked my way through it and finally ended up with some clean gas again.

Question - I am quessing that I have some really nasty stuff sitting at the bottom of my tank. Is there anything I can do about that other than totally removing the tank and cleaning it?

Hi, the best way to clean your tank is to remove it, and see if your local radiator shop can "boil" it out. The carb may have some "stuff" in it as well. Also, check your timing and such to be sure. my 2.5 cents. good luck

Those tanks aren't all that bad to remove, I pulled my seat and had it out in less that 1/2 hour the hosed it out, let it drain and dry in the sun for a day then even painted it. You really need to replace the fuel filter and check the carb as well.
