E4OD is it good or Bad?
I have been told these trannie are crap and have a lot of problems. Though the last mechanic said they are strong. I love this truck, but it is just one thing after another with this one. It is on it's 3 rd engine that I know of and has a rebuilt E4OD that was done badly, now is being rebuilt again. 1st since I got it a year ago. I know I don't have a choice because the 302 I have only works with that one. I have already put a 3" body lift and some minor body work done to it and I will be putting larger tires on it about a 33" and have many plans for it. I just don't want to sink to much if it is not worth it. I got last Feb. and had to have a used 302 put in 2 mos. later then 3 mos the tranny started to slip and then I parked until I could have the tranny work done. I was quoted $900.00 for the job and then he found out that just the torque converter was $325 and he need more money for parts. The other shops quoted $1800 at the least. The $900 job is at my usual small family run for over 20 yrs shop.
Sorry for running on just frustrated,
Kallie
Consider the mods (33" tires, etc) that you want to do.
Consider the power that your engine has.
Consider the way that you're going to want to use the truck.
Then...
Consider if more than one of these things will leave you stranded somewhere.
Then..
Consider what it would take to get a different rig that can do what you want, but, you may start this whole thing over again on that new rig too.
Ok, enough philosphysing.
Fix it right. Use it well. Take care of it and it will take care of you!
I would get not only the quotes, but what they are planning to do on the tranny, what parts to replace, etc. I I think if properly cared for, the E4OD is a good tranny.
