Bass Engine and BBE?
I'm not sure what BBE is, though...did you find that on an Alpine product? What's the link/model number?

I believe BBE stands for Bucket Brigade something, as that is the hardware used to implement the delay. What is really does is time delay some frequencies compared to others to compensate for phase shift created by the amps and speakers.
Does it work? Fairly subjective but I'd spend my money elsewhere. From what I've heard it does help sometimes. On a high end system it is unnecessary and can sound overdone, almost blurred. On a cheap system it can help make it sound clearer. Hope this helps.
I used to have BBE sound enhancer on an older Alpine unit. Netfly sums it up well what it is and does. It adds spaciousness, body (bass), and highs to the sound. It works well to make cheap speakers sound better. However, if you are running high quality speakers, I don't use it. I prefer a natural sound.

I use the home version – phase coupled activator, and the variable sub-harmonic enhancement sounds awesome. Definitely a plus on any system.
