Transmission noise

I have a 91 F150, I6 with a 5 speed trans(don't know exactly what it's name is). When I let off the clutch and at low speeds in low gears there is a rattling sound coming from the trans. It has done this since I bought it 2 years ago(with 125k miles, now has 137k). Doesn't seem to affect operation, but was wondering what it might be.

Does the rattling go away as you start to engage the clutch?. If so it could be the throwout bearing. Some minor rattle is normal for a throwout. Screeching or lots of rattle would indicate a bad bearing. When the clutch is engaged, the throwout will be under pressure and makes less noise except if it is going bad.

I vaguely recall all the manual trannies I have owned had some rattle or slight gear noise while idling or rolling along slowly. The noise is most easily heard in a quite parking garage where the noise reflects back at you.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

The noise seems to happen as I let off the clutch and/or right after I have let it out and am at a slow speed. It's only a few seconds and I don't hear it in higher gears. Just low gears (1&2) at slow speeds.

I noticed today that while making a turn at a stoplight, it made the noise. I was in 3rd gear and didn't depress the clutch. As I started to speed up it made the sound for a few seconds. Just seems to do it at slow speeds/takeoffs.

Seems like it might be the t/o bearing. It's made this noise for 2 yrs(since I bought it), should I just not worry about it or should I look into replacing it?
