Our garage is the bare minimum, it does have electric but only two outlets, we want to run more up on the ceiling for our shop lights but dont know if we should go ahead and run everything and get it all hooked up before we plywood the ceiling, right now we have the rafters done for storage and nnow we want to insulate it and maybe use 1/4 osb. We want to finish the garage by putting 1/4 on the walls also but dont know what should be done first, cause if you put up the plywood without electric it would be hard to run the wire but if you run the electric before the plywood it will be hard to locate the holes for where the outlets are. Thanks for the help guys.
Do the electric first, it is easy enough to cut out a hole in the OSB board with a router and then screw the electric (blue) box to the stud for the outlet flush with the board.
If the garage is attached to the house you should cover the OSB with drywall (fire proofing).
here the 7/16 thick osb is about the same cost as the 1/4
I used the 7/16 which is plenty thick to attach shelves and any other things plus it is very durable
I painted it white to brighten it up, had to use oil base Kils (stain covering paint) first because of the bleed through on latex
I agree, run wires first. I used 1/4" lauan plywood for the walls and ceiling. I stained and put on three coats of poly. The plywood is great to hang things on using screws. Its also very durable!
Well, draglink, you have a beautiful garage for sure! The last time I saw one like that it was at one of the "Street of Dreams" homes in Seattle - the house was listed at over $2 million! What did you use on the floor? It looks like hardwood around the perimeter and something else where the car is parked. I am looking for ideas ad materials to refinish my concrete floor with something impervious to oil, gas, etc.
Thanks! I'm very proud of my garage! I built every bit of it myself. It is 30x32, and gets used a lot. People see the garage and dont think I work out there. I'm always working on the truck, and also restoring a 65 Falcon in it. I just spend time cleaning it when I'm done. Those pics were from a few months ago, other than another old gas pump and a couple more signs, it looks the same. The floor around the workbench is 3/8" glue-down oak flooring. I have a piece of berber carpet in the corner where the bar/TV/ref/couch is. The concrete floor has Rust-o-leum garage floor epoxy. It comes in a kit...I got it from Lowes...I think it took three kits to do mine. They give you everything you need including multi-colored flecks. I'm a builder rep. for a floor covering company, so the wood and carpet cost me zero! I really saved a lot by doing it all myself, I may have $20,000 in the whole garage, including heat and AC.
