I just bought a 78 F250 with a 390 4v installed in it. The kid that had it claims he just rebuilt it and it looks like it was because when I pulled the heads the pistons were hardly discolored. One of my problems is he installed a crane cam and its bending push rods now I have seen this before on a cleveland I had.Crane gave me spacers to put under the rockers and all was well. My question is if I measure the lift can I determine the spacer I need or I will have to tear the front of the motor apart and pull the cam. The other question I have is what compression should I be seeing I don't have a book on this motor and really don't know what year it is. I am guessing 66-68 and it came out of a car because they left the front sump pan on it. Did they ever change to 5/8" plugs on the FE's this one has 13/16" plugs

You don't need spacers, you need a different length pushrod. to measure for the correct length pushrod, you need a pushrod length gauge.

all FE's, except ones in 4x4 trucks have front sump pans
