serial # order

can someone explain the serial # system for me. my vin is

F26SLO34384

so if i understand right my serial # is (letter) O 34384, or is it L 034384. did they start the letters over each year? when i look for parts , most listings say from ser#T80,001 or b4 ser#Y20,001.

In 1978 they started the consecutive build number with 2 letters.

Your consecutive build number is O (that's an O not a Zero) followed by 4 or 5 digits depending on the amount of production.

They did jump some letters to avoid confusion & yet used the O

Think of it this way.
The first 5 digits are before the build number starts.

The Letters of the year graduated up until the end of 1977 line, in the 1978 year they started at AE0000.

so they used the letters in order (A is older than B) ? but O is not between T and Y, but parts fit my truck that say 'for T80,001 and up' and 'b4 Y20,001' . i guess what i'm wondering is what letters were used in which years, and did each line (f150, f250, LTD, etc. ...) use their own series of letters?
