from a quick search you may have a 428 4-v motor. this would be a very good engine to have. Is that number off the side of the block behind the starter? Let me know I will look it up in the Ford interchange manual.

I found the number on the front of the motor on the opposite side as the oil filter and almost in the same spot as it on the other side.

C7ME-A is a common # found on FE blocks. Could be 352, 390 or 428, pretty much anything but a 427. Measuring bore and stroke is the only way to tell for sure.

I know its a 390 but I just wondered what kind of Mercury car it came out of the C means the 60's the 7 mean's 67 the M means Mercury and the E means the engineering dept. but I don't know how to tell what kind of car it came out of. What did mercury have that year that offered the 390?

nope, it never came from a merc . plenty of those came stock in trucks with that casting number. the ford casting numbers were random. also unless you look at the date code the "7" means nothing. they used C7ME-A blocks up until the early 70's then the D3TE-A block came on sceen.

The numbers cross over to a '67-'70 428 c.i.d, 428-4V, Police Interceptor with a 4.13 inch bore and 0.015 deck height and a 3.98 inch stroke , Cobra Jet or could also be a 1967-70, 330MD c.i.d., Medium Duty Truck.

C7ME translates to a 67 Mercury Engine, the -A represents an original part with no revision on the original cast.

What the cast number on the heads? I'll cross over those to see if they match with the engine block.

68AE-H heads are just run of the mill heads.

The FE family of engines casting numbes are very confusing and flustrating to say the least. One way of determing the stroke is to remove a spark plug and measure the stroke with a small rod through the hole.
