Basic Electrical Question

I've got a 2001 Ford F250 PSD. It has two 12V batteries wired in parallel to produce enough amps to turn over the big engine. All works well.

I have an add-on that requires 24V. Is there a way I can use the two batteries (wired separately in series maybe) to produce the 24V I need without burning up all the 12V systems in my truck?

back in day, large trucks had 24 volt systems. in the late 70's, they switched over to a 12 volt system, but kept the 24 volt starter. to start, there was a switching circuit that would switch the batteries from parallel to series for start, then back to parallel for 12 volt run. they were problematic, and would stick in the series position, sending 24 volts through the system, burning out the electronics and alternators. as the starters needed replacement, we would replace them with 12 volt units and toss the switcher boxes. it made life allot easier, and kept drivers happier, they did not have to worry about the Cb's and stereos blowing up after starting the truck...

maybe you can find some kind of newer solid state switcher to achieve the same effect...
i mean for switching, not burning up the truck

The two batteries you have now are tied permanently in parallel with the large wires. With a lot of complicated switching, you could run the 24 volt piece you have, and run the 12 volt truck wiring off of just one of the batteries. It would take a lot of head scratching though to get it right, since you would have to revert back to parallel operation for starting.

I think JCWhitney sells a 12 to 24v convertor don't they?

The converter idea sounds like the best method but I haven't found anything that will step up the voltage from 12V to 24V yet.

I just found a board that fits the bill @ http://zahninc.com/su11.html. I'd like an enclosure so I'll keep looking. Thanks for the idea.

How much current does your 24V add-on require? There are a lot of sync buck DC to DC converters out that might work.....
