I'm running a Powertrax in the rear and a Trac Lok in the front with 4.10s and 33s in my 84 F150. It's a tad harsh on the street with the rear locker,if you mash on it around corners. It handles terrible in the snow without weight in the bed, even in 4wd if you aren't careful. I personally like the Powertrax, it has held up well for what I use it for.
Some of the stuff you say is a stretch too. Sorry, but I've noticed that since I've come back. *Is fully locked going to be transparent? No, but its also not as 'Problematic" as people said. I've driven a locked truck in the snow. You can't talk on your cell phone, eat, and drive at the same time, but then again that's no different then driving a stick. People make it look worse or better depending on which side they're on*
For a daily driver, I couldn't recommend a spool. I *may* run Monsterbaby's old spool in the rear of my truck if I can't find a detroit for the right price soon enough - but generally I would say not to do it. DD's don't need the full traction. I probably don't need the full traction, but I'll appreciate it when I'm going through the drags, and I'd rather have 100% traction then 0% traction. I've heard good about the Aussie locker. All I can say. For his use, I would recommend AT MOST a lunchbox locker like the Aussie, but I'd lean more towards a good (read: Not Trash-Lok) limited slip as others have said. The gear driven one interests me though, I've always thought that'd be a neat one to have.
Edit: Added what is ** above.
