tie rod end question

77 f-250 highboy, power assist steering, dana 44 front axle. i need to replace the drivers side tie rod end. the tie rod end i took out had a few inches threaded into the adjuster sleeve. the new one i got from NAPA was shorter, and would only be threaded in about an inch when if i used it. is this the correct part. they couldn't find anything else on their computer that looked right. in my NPD catalog, they list 2 for my application, depending on my axle ratings, which i cant read on the door tag. one is for 7" and the other is 5", but they list the same part # for both. the part i took out is 7" measured from center of ball stud to end of threads. is the shorter one napa gave me the correct one? or should i keep searching for a exact match of what came out?

thanks

use the part you took off to find exactly what you need. iF it is shorter than the part you bought, it is the wrong one. Does it make sense to replace something 7feet long with something 5feet long?

no, was just wondering if an inch of threads was enough. i was thinking if npd has the same part for a 5" and 7" application, maybe it doesnt make a difference if its shorter, as long as its threaded in enough. i couldnt see that part failing, but dont have any experience w/ steering parts, is why i posted. thanks for the reply.

i think you need to have the two tie rods pretty close together. I think I have less than a half inch of gap between mine.
