dana 44 front axle
Without me getting into alot of detail, can someone tell me what keeps water out of the front diff.? I pulled both axles to install new joint & did't notice any seals other than the seal to protect the spindle bearing!

The only seals I'm aware of are the ones in the axle shafts right next to the ring and pinion on either side, but you can put some on the outside of the shafts so the water doesn't sit inside the shafts.

There are two axle seal which is mounted just outside the ring and pinon bearings on either side of the axle housing (the old axle seal must be removed by removing the the front axle cover and ring and gears). There is the pinon seal mounted by the yoke. There is the vent hole adapter and hose mounted just above the ring gear on axle housing.

I think the real answer is nothing really keeps the water out of the front diff. In all my years of wheeling I've discovered that if you run in the water, changes the fluid in both differentals. The seals in the housing are really there to keep the oil in and the dirt out. Make sure your diff. vent is open and free of blockage. When a warm diff. goes into cold water and cools if the vent is plugged it will pull water in like mad.
