When I purchased my 2000 Excursion (not too long ago), I tested the 4x4 and it all seemed to work ok. The other day, it was a little slippery, so I decided to put it in 4x4 high to start off at a stop light. I put it in high, and it seemed like it worked. Then when I got home, I took the X around a few lots that were muddy/snowy and put it in 4x4 low the correct way. It would not lock in 4x4 low. So I took my foot off the brake, and let it roll, and nothing happend so I gave it a little gas, and the transfer case made a big clunk (louder than normal) Then low worked great. The same problem happened taking it out of low. I tried low yesterday again, and this time, when I put it in low, nothing happened, so I stepped on the gas a little and it didn't move- it just revved like it was in neautral. Does anyone have any tips or have been in any similar situations?
To get into 4x4LOW, you need to be completely stopped, tranny in neutral, foot on the brake.
Only then will the GEM module try to go into LOW.
The other problem, where it seemed to be in 4x4HI right after turning the ****, and then wasn't, sounds like the hubs are not staying locked. This is a particular failure mode that points right at the auto-locking hubs themselves. I had this problem.
Otherwise, you need to get more details about what it does and doesn't do.
Thats exactly how I attempted to put it into 4x4 LOW. Usually when you do this, you will here a slight "clunk". This was different, it was a loud "clunk" after a long period of time and after I had stepped on the gas a little. When I was doing this, I had the front hubs manually locked becuase the auto option does not work. (I need new hubs.)

Something does sound right - might be time to remove the servo and lube it ...
Even with the front hubs locked, that shouldn't cause a problem since by the time you get to 4x4LOW, the hubs already auto-locked.
Does it go to 4x4HI easily? Go into LOW a few times and see if it frees up. If it does, I'd lube the servo.
The 4x4 will not lock in HI or LOW if the hubs are in auto. When they are manually locked it goes into 4x4 HI perfect. LOW had a problem! Last night, I tried LOW again. The reaction time was better, and it only made the loud clunk once. I tried it 2 more times (about 15 min. between each try) and the third time, it worked like it should normally. I think that the previous owner never used 4x4 LOW and possibly HI on the truck, and I am going to fix the hubs or replace them, and in the mean time, I will put it in LOW once a week. Its a 2000 with only 48K miles. He said that he never drove it in the winter. But that could be a lie.
