Did all 65's come With a 9inch rear end and what would be the standard gear ratio for a 352 with 3 speed? What would be the lowest gear you would use on this truck for fuel economy? Thanks Guys
I do belive all of these vintage fords came with a 9 inch at least in the pickups. Mine had 3:83 gears. if it is still there look at the tag on the rear end and it will have a 3 diget number of the ratio. I am running 3.25s now and wish i could find a 3.00 or 2.75 is rear end. It all depends on how much you want to slip the clutch and how fast you need to go. I have a 292 with a 4 speed and I can still start in second with the 3.25s
good luck

I bumped my gears to 3.00 with the 352 with no problems. I have the 4 speed with the granny gear and don't need to slip the clutch at all. The 352 has plenty of torque and doesn't strain at all. It also made a big differance in gas mileage dropped the freeway rpm's to about 2500 at 65 mph. I also have a 65 with the 9" rearend.
FWIW there are a few '65/'66 F100's with a Dana 44 rear axle. If your axle has no removeable rear cover it is the 9". Anything lower numerically than 3.00:1 will take some effort to get moving on a hill or with a load. It usually means slipping the clutch a bit or using the "granny" first that you do not have.

From my experence, that combo likely had a 3.25 gear, and should handle a 3.00 just fine.
Hi, A 9 inch is easy (once you get the drums off). You have to remove the brake drums and remove 4 (it think) bolts from the axle housing holding the axle and backing plate to the housing. next pull the axle out being careful not to rip the seal. next remove the driveline and pull the pumpkin. if you do not have another pumpkin ready then you have to replace the ring gear and pinion which is beond my ablility to explan.
I just had another pumpkin from another truck and swaped straight across.
assemble in reverse order.
