I have a 95 ranger 2.3 2wd and its time top change the rear brake pads. The frount were really easy but now i have hit a brick wall. Jacked and blocked the rear axle. Removed tires and cant get the stinking drums off. Ive p/b blasted, hammered pried and everything else under the sun to do but to no advile. Any ideas thease should slide right off. any ideas would be helpful plz and thank you
Remove the dust cover on the backing plate that give you acess to the star wheel and insert a small screwdriver in there the push the star wheel adjuster away and at the same time while pushing that back off the star wheel, this is what i've dont in the past and it works good. It's tricky to get the little screwdriver in there to push the adjuster away but it will work.
What Jim posted is true if you've worn your drums to the point there is a ledge in there that the shoes can't get over. In this case you can pull the drum off, but only so far.
I suspect however your drum is rusted to the axle if you cannot pull them off at all.
I agree with Jim and Probedude. You're brake shoes have probably worn into the drum and rust has most likely added to the problem creating a ledge that the shoes can't get over. You need to retract the shoes. Like Jim suggested pull off the rubber plug on the backing plate (it may be disguised if particularly dirty). Take a troublelight/flashlight and hold up the adjusting lever with small screwdriver while using another screwdriver to turn the starwheel from bottom up and back off the shoes. You'll know you're turning the wheel the right way, 'cause if you're not, you'll be adjusting up and won't be able to turn the wheel/drum at all. If you're sure you have them retracted and you still can't get the drum off, a little heat around the hub will help. (If you don't have a good set of torches even 5-10 minutes with a plumbers torch will do in a jam). Good luck.
