I HAVE A 1990 F150 WITH A 5.0 V8.MY PROBLEM IS,UNDER HARD ACCELERATION I NOTICE A NOISE FROM THE BOTTOM END OF THE ENGINE.IT SOUNDS LIKE A RATTLING SOUND OR DIESELING.IS MY ENGINE ON IT'S LAST LEG?CAN I USE SOME KIND OIL ADDITIVE OR WILL I HAVE TO GET IT REBUILT.THE ENGINE HAS OVER 271,000 K'S ON IT. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.
If you have low oil pressure along with this noise, you can bet it's telling you the bearings are on the way out. There's no quick fix for it, it'll need a bottom-end rebuild.
Don't go by the reading on your stock oil pressure gauge either. It's basically more of an idiot light with a needle than a real gauge, just telling you if you have oil pressure or not but not telling you what the oil pressure actually is. You can get a mechanical gauge pretty cheaply that you can install in a relatively short time that will give you a more accurate picture of what your oil pressure is doing.
