new key after ignition switch change

Couldn't find a better group, so I'll try it here.

I just replaced my broken ignition switch today - went really well and it only took like 5 minuter; however, now I have 2 keys, one for the ignition and one for the doors. How and where do I get the key code for the doors, so the new ignition keys can have the door code cut into them? My old keys don't work too well with the doors (worn, and copy of copy of copy ) so I would rather not have that copied into the new keys, instead I'd like to have the proper key cut by the key code.

TIA

You will have to get the door locks coded to the new ignition switch key. Call around your area, there should be a locksmith that will do it.

If you take the door locks out yourself, he may not charge as much. Open the door, and look at the door jamb area of the door itself. Level with the door lock where you put the key in the outside of the door, right in the corner, you will see a rectangle piece of metal. Pry this metal piece out, and the lock tumbler should come out of the door.

Thanks. I was hoping there is a way to get the code without taking out the lock.

If your truck is not too old, a dealer might be able to get the code if you give them the VIN. That way you can have new keys made to fit your door locks.

The better solution is to have a locksmith make new tumblers for your doors that will fit your new ignition keys. It's easy.

You probably haven't seen a replacement ignition switch's key -- the first half is blank (uncut) and the ignition's combination is cut onto the tip and that half. The other half is reserved for the door. I definitely want to keep the old door locks because now I can hide an old key in the bumper, or anywhere in the frame without worrying that someone can drive off my car with it. It will unlock the doors, but it cannot be used to start the engine.
