Exhaust Help

I know this question has probably been asked like 10 million times, i was searching and couldn't find what i was lookin for though. I have a 94 IDI with the stock turbo and I cut the muffler off and put a straight pipe, but the thing really doesnt sound loud at all. I mean, it has a annoying raaap to it, it just doesn't sound "Clean". My buddy put a straight pipe on is 00 Powerstroke, its loud, and it sounds clean without the raaap sound when he revs or slows down. I'm looking for an exhaust system to make my truck loud, make the turbo scream, and make it sound clean without the jake sound. I get a hunk of tax money back so im lookin to spend some $$ My truck has a 3" body lift on it too so i can fit a pretty big pipe.

The muffler doesn't just quiet the exhaust, it smooths the pulses of the engine. The newer diesels have a better tuned exhaust and so the muffler itself isn't responsible for quelling the pulses of the cylinders.

How big is your pipe? I have a non turbo 6.9 and i had a straight pipe on it but the small pipe made it sound really bad. I suggest getting sumthing like a 3 1/2 to 6, 6 is going to be expensive so it depends on how much your willing to spend.

there is no way you are going to have an open exhaust on a diesel without getting the "Jake Brake sound" while decelerating. the only way to eliminate that sound is with a muffler. and the bigger the pipe, the more resonating you will get.

But the stock turbo downpipe is 2.25" ID pipe.
To go three inch from the turbo back you need to get a new outlet flange from ATS.
The turbo does mellow the exhaust out a lot except for 2600 RPM to 2100 RPM decelerating.
Even that sounds good with 3" dual stacks and a big load on holding it back going down a big hill.

Dave do you know the cost of the kit for the 6.9? I haven't seen one on the ATS or DPS site and thus far I'm too lazy to call them. Thanks.

Which price do you need?
The turbo system is 1995 as I remember from ATS, exhaust pipes are extra.
The outlet flange and downpipe, I saw a price someone posted a while back, but I can not remember what it was.

The 7.3 and 6.9 kits are the same one.
Fits either engine.

Just wondering.....since you are saying the 6.9 and 7.3 are the same, could you get the turbo+everything ealse off of a wrecked PSD and put it on or no?? Seems like it might be cheaper if it worked.

1983 - 1987 6.9 and 1988 - 1994 7.3 IDI are the same.
1994.5 - 2003 7.3 Power Stroke is a DI motor, not an IDI motor and is not the same.

I know that part but what does the injection have to do with the turbo??? In another thread you said that a PSD tranny would bolt on to a 6.9, so whats the diff in the exhaust?

The trans will fit b/c the bellhousing is the same. That doesn't mean the exhaust manifolds are the same.
