power steering fluid

if i am not mistaken my 89 pickup spcifies type F fluid...is this the stuff that comes labled as power steering fluid (clear color)?...i would like to use Mobil 1 ATF if tranny fluid works better than power steering fluid...i also heard something about mobil changing something about their atf fluid and people were buying up the last of them in the old bottles...What's the skinny on mobil1 atf?...btw, i have changed all ps components (pump, hoses, gear, and added cooler)

I've got a 1970 F100 that spec's Type F for the power steering.

Really, all they're using it for is hydraulic fluid and lubricating the pump. Just use what they spec and run it.

FWIW, my '97 Expedition also spec's. Type F ATF for the power steering unit. 120k trouble free miles so far using Type F.

I use Castrol Type F, & suction out the reservoir & replace that amount of fluid every few months.

I have heard of people taking the return line off and capping that spot on the pum and running the enging to pump all the old fluid out as they pour in new.

could air get in the system when you recoonct the hose?

Even if you got air in the hose, just turn the steering left to right a couple of times max range and it will burp the air out. Then recheck level.

All ATF's work as hydraulic fluid. For some non-technical reason, probably laziness, the power steering group never updated the service spec when Mercon first came along. Friction modification only matters for transmission clutch packs.

unless you have the older ford P/S pumps which are prone to failure when used with friction modifier.

Explain exactly how the pumps failed due to Dexron/Mercon.

cardone the rebuilder of these explained that the older pumps used compressed fiber discs as the fins on the pump and that with the modifier they would pulsate up and down and cause pressure surges. they claim they did testing on them to verify this. just like the new ford rack and pinions can't use anything else but a modified fluid or the valves stick and cause a vibration to be felt in the wheel.

I am running it in my 94 F150 4x4. After 150K and sitting idle for a year the PS pump was squealing like a stuck pig. (it was always loud IMO, "normal" sed Ford dealer when it was new) Anyway I used a vacuum pump to pull out the old fluid and topped up with the mobil 1. I did this three times, driving a few days in between, until I used the whole quart. The pump is nice and quiet for the last 5K miles...
