I am thinking of updating my 97 f250 psd cc to a 99 f250 psd cc or so. I have a 5 spd manual in my truck but was thinking of going with an auto. Is their only one auto trans ford put in the superduty? I am slso considering a 6 spd manual. What are your though on transmitions. Does one help more on mpg than another? Which one is better built? I do some towing form time to ttme. Is their anything I should stay away from? What is the best maintance for a transmition?
thanks for your help

I can't say about the easy-matic but I do know people spend alot of time and money beefin'em up. The 6sps. are practically bullit proof. I love my 6sp. and would highly recomend it to anyone.
Manual transmissions generally get better mpg's due to the fact that YOU contol when and how the tranny shifts. See my sig for my truck, I have the 4R100 in mine and have NO complaints thus far, but then I've babied my truck for all its life.

In the years 1999-2002 the only "Auto" tranny you could get in a SD truck is the 4R100. It is a good transmission, but does suffer from "soft" shifts.
The best maintenance for an Auto transmission is to watch your temps while towing. Plus, changing the fluid as recommended by the service manual.

Reason: change word
will the SD pickups with the auto trans idel up with the emergency brake on like the 6spd do?
Will shift kits help the auto out? Or is it a wast of time?
thanks

Good to hear. I'm strongly considering a new '06 PSD with a 6sp manual. Do you know what the gear ratios are for the tranny? What rear axle do you have? I don't tow much, but occassionally a construction trailer or concrete trailer. How would the 3.73 rear do for all around driving and the occassional tow? Also, should I even consider the 5.4L gasser??? I'm in construction and carry tools, supplies and lumber in between empty loads and do some long interstate trips to the mountains a couple times a year.
Thanks ahead. I'm trying to pick up all the good info I can before making the plunge!
I'm not sure what the gearing for the tranny is but I do have 3.73s. Even with larger tires I think it has plenty of power but I don't tow much. Sometimes I acctualy wish it had a 7th gear. I wouldn't even consider the gasser after owning a PSD especially for towing or hauling.
