Question brake drum swap interchangeability?????

hey guys. i know there are a lot more looking at this section than brakes so i'll ask here......

what years will interchange the rear drum brake assemblies on a ford 9 inch??

i have a 66 axle missing parts i can't find anywhere, its the 11X1 3/4 drum mounted to axle in a four bolt pattern and would like to just pop on entire assemblies from a salvage yard but old ones are hard to find here, so thought if possible to bolt up something from 70's. will the patterns matchup? other than width of drum which doesn't bother me personally, the internals look the same on a 79 but can't get back to parts truck for a while to check bolt pattern and a missing piece on the parts truck has me whooped good. btw its the handbrake link and spring thats missing and nobody seems to be able to find them for the 11 in drum. thanx in advance all who can help

Bill

There is a post dated 4/24/04 by member 'banjopicker 66' you should find helpful. If you go to the forum tap uptop, then tab down and open up the 'search tab'. Under "key word" put in 'rear brake upgrade'. There is an arrow in same box and select 'search titles only'. Finally, narrow search further and go to "search forums" and select the 61-66. You should locate the article. Possiby find additional articles. Sorry, there is probably and easier way of going about relaying info, unforunately not computer literate. Hope find it helpful.

Hey Bill, May I suggest that you look for a 68-72 rear to put under your truck. In 68 Ford increased the size of the brakes for the rear and kept it there until 86 when the 9" was discontinued. Keep the old hand brake cables though you will need to reuse them.
In 73 Ford widened the rear axle but the brake size remained. Should you decide one day to go to power disc for the front you will have properly sized rears for the set.

this thing has so many parts on it, i don't even know anymore, it seems to be a 66 f250 but its 5 bolt axles, so it could be a 65 f100, but don't think the 65 f100 came with a 352.... just going with what matches up the best as i go, think this neat 4x4 project is getting to be more trouble than its worth, might get this thing up and running good and sell or trade for a mid 60's to early 70's 4x4 or just get a body for this chassis and put the 57-60 mutt part on a custom 2wd chassis and have two beasts lol. i don't know but i know i want an inspection sticker on this thing and can't do that without the rear brakes working properly!!!!!

If you have a nine inch rear those links I have will not work . The links are for a stock f250 rear which I believe is a dana 60 or 70.

truckfarmer, the brake shoe/drum is the same from 68 to 86. I wrote an article after I did the upgrade to my 66. Go to http://ncfto.org/ click on technicle articles, it is the third fronm the bottom. To use the setup on the 57-67 axle tubes, the axle and backing plates have to be swapped also.

If the truck has 5 lugs it is not a F250 as they all had 8. The 352 V8 was offered in the F100s.

Bill, Sorry about the work schedule, maybe if you post were you are located a fellow FTEer could help you out.

Bill

I don't have any service on the weekend. just week days. I will shoot you a PM. and give you my cell number.

I am going to attempt to strip the 66 short wide this weekend for the second time. Some of the guys form the MAC slicks were comming up but snow intervened and we re scheduled it for this weekend.

You can have the entire setup off the rear on it. all i need is the housing and axles.

jowilker--Thanks for doing that article, I completed that swap with the help of your article last fall, works great! I used the 65 housing and 69 axles/backing plates... A big improvement along with my front disc swap at the same time. If I didnt see that article I would have wasted my money as I needed to rebuild the rears anyway! Always nice to upgrade instead of jsut repair!

Thanks for the flowers, I hoped it would help someone else, when I did it. Was it hard to follow or did you understand it pretty good? I can try to reword it if it would help.
