I've got a '96 F350 2wd and my passenger side tire is almost completely worn out on the outside edge only. Never got feathered or spotty, just wore out. Balljoints gone? Which one is more common to go, top or bottom? Iv'e only got 90k on the truck, but something is gone. It pulls to the right a bit, and has a bit of a shudder over 70 mph.
Any help would be appreciated. There's a local place that will do a suspension assessment for free, but it'll be a bit before I can get it in there.
Thanks
Hey full. I would try checking the alignment on it for one. One way to check your front end is to jack up the one side, get a bar of some sort and stick it under the tire, and see if there is any movement. I am not really sure though if there is any balljoint that go bad commonely. Another thing I have seen too, is lack of tire rotation. On some truck that have came into the shop, it seems like the tire wore out on the one edge, usually inside though, and we checked it on the alignment machine and it was good. So then we always ask about tire rotation and in some cases they never rotate them.
Sounds like you do have a worn balljoint. Almost always the lower joint to go first. Jack it up on that side and try to move bottom of tyre in and out, this should show up any wear.
Pyro, I knew you had to be causing trouble somewhere!
Anyway thanks, I'll jack it up and see what's loose.
Rotating the tires won't work too well right now as I have 215/85's on the front and 235/85's on the duals. I first noticed it after having put new tires on the front.
I thought maybe allignment, and it may need that too, but only having the one tire wearing seemed more like a ball joint to me. I'm no expert though. I can fix stuff but diagnostics are not my thing. Turns out the parts are actually reasonable. I think the heavy duty ball joints were aroung $50. I'll see what it needs first though.
Thanks again.
Hey Pyro, I thought your truck was a '97?
