I have an 88 Ford E150 with front and rear air and just replaced the AC compressor, and now the Rear unit freezes up starting at the expansion valve
undoubtedly I have a leak somewhere,
I have used a TIF electronic leak detector but can't find one anywhere. What are the chances of finding a leak with the UV dye and a blacklight? and what would I look for ?
It sounds like the expansion valve might be bad. That or the o-rings have gone bad there. Did you replace all the o-rings in the system? If not start there.
Our '88 needs the o-rings in the rear, we replaced the front ones during the R134 conversion. I'd try the o-rings first, it may just be that they are leaking. Then again it could be the evaporator in the rear as well.
I have tried to find the leak with soap bubbles, UV refrigerant with a blacklight and with an electronic leak detector and can't find anything on it but I don't trust the electronic detector very much it may not be working right. The only thing that I haven't checked is the evaporator and the condensor. I also changed out the front o-rings when I did the conversion, but didn't change the rear,
If it doesn't fix the problem, I guess that I will have tear into the front evaporator area and see what is going on there.
Do you have any ideas as to how would be the easiest way? and do I get to the front evaporator from the outside or inside
Thanks
CM
You'll probably have to pull the heater box to get to the evaporator. You may be able to pull the black panel off on the inside and get to it. I don't rightly rememeber on that though. It's been a while since we tore into ours.
