An Odd Problem

When I hit a big bump in the road, my check engine light comes on and I loose power to my wheels for a split second. I do not believe the engine is shutting down during that time but I am not certain. It does not happen often so it is hard to troubleshoot. I think it has to be warm when it happens too.

The first thing I looked at was if the battery was jumping up and shorting to the hood. It was loose but that didn't solve the problem. Plus I don't see why that would do what it was doing anyway.

Could I be loosing fire for that split second??

ANybody else had this problem?

It defenitly sounds like a lose wire to your ingnition system somewhere. I would check all your grounds under the truck and all wires to your coil, distributer etc. you probably are losing complete power for just a split second, becuse you are losing electricity to a piece that alows your engine to run. Think and test for wires that when removed will stall your engine, then start tracing them back to their connections.

Also check your codes. that check engine light might be throwing a code to the component that the wire is lose on.

My ignition coil constantly goes out so initially I thought of that. I've never had it do this before, it usually just decides to go out and thats it, end of story.

That'll be the first thing I look at. The starter solenoid also. Its grounded to the body, maybe it came loose or one of the signals has a bad connection.

It is just wierd that it will do it for a split second only when I hit a big bump in the road. It never gets stuck like that, it always goes back to normal right away.

Lets say it is something to do with my ignitinon. What else would happen? Wouldn't my tach drop to zero or start to drop during that period? I try to notice it every time but it's hard to catch it cause it is not a consistent problem. Like I said, it only happens when I hit big bumps but doesn't always happen when I hit a big bump. Plus it seems like it has to be warm. What the hell would that have to do with ignition??

I just got my transmission rebuilt. I know very little about transmissions, however it is usually easiest to troubleshoot by first looking at what you changed recently. The transmission is one, the others are I added offroad lights and replaced my headlights and headlight assembly and also changed the rear window motor. Thats it.

I'm confused fellas. Sorry for the long post.

I had that problem with my 1985 351 HO 4V. I discovered that the upper radiator hose would flex just enough to hit the coil tower and kill the engine temporarily. I just shortened the hose a little and lowered the coil so the hose would not contact the coil when I hit a pot hole or a rut.
