Event though I bought my modem back when the Surfboard cost about $200, I haven't been sorry yet. At the time the rent (from Charter) would have been $10 a month, it's since dropped to $5, I think. After four years with no problems, I've got my money's worth. If mine got nuked by a lightning strike I'd re-evaluate - there's a certain value to be able to call one number and say "my internet is down, come fix it!" - but I think I'd go the same way.
BTW, I just got their VoIP phone too - the package with the phone (unlimited local/unlimited domestic long distance/no install charge) was the same price I was paying for interent and digital cable tv before - a no brainer...

Yeah, I just did the Cablevision thing, Optimum Voice (you have to already have cable modem service). With Digital IO and cable-modem, adding the VOIP was only $14.95. Unlimited long-distance/local.
And, Boost, which is normally $14.95 is only 9.95 with the VOIP. Boost gives 30Mbps download, 2Mbps upload (and not much capping), your own webserver, domain, etc.
Might be what i need them to do for me, is install a new amplifier. Strange though, the problem is intermittent and never occurs when the tech is around.
An amplifier will not fix the problem. You generally do not want to amplify a data line, otherwise you will get problems with throughput and other things.
