i saw that about either yesterday or the day before looked at it, got confused, and went on. it would be good for a front wheel drive dunebuggy type thing with a really narrow front end.

My buddy has a small forklift looking front end loader thing called a Big Dipper that has a Dana 60 in the front that is about that wide. It has rear steer though , maybe it's for something like that.

lol...my craftsman has a belt that turns the rear end...i don't think it'd work for me...that would be a pretty neat thing to put behind a rail buggy with something like a 302 in front of it.

It's not homemade, thats an industrial steering dana-44 (see the threaded, adjustable axle tubes)

probably from a forklift, aircraft tug, self postioning AG pump.

They were also used under many Ditchwitches in throughout the 70's and 80's, maybe later. My uncle has a large late 70's Ditchwitch with a cable plow, 8' trencher chain, backhoe and 6 way blade on it. I has a pair of super narrow D60's, both steering axles. We've broken the rear axle on at least three occasions that I know of, everything from axleshafts to busting the pinion clean off, and the whole axle housing breaking in half. They may be stout axles under a trail rig, but under a 12,000lb machine with 31x15.50 terra tires and about a 300:1 creeper gear they are barely sufficient.
