I'm new to fords so please be gentle. I picked up a 94 Ranger with 111,000Km on it. It's a 2.3(8 plugs) auto Reg cab from what I understand. The tranny slips bad coming out of first and it doesn't want to down shift. It just had some shop mess with the tranny and the girl I'm buying it from says they have to "Adjust" it. They are supposed to be doing it for free tomorrow. Tranny fluid is nice and red and smells good still. I know it had work done but not sure what they did?
What is the tranny called and is there a way to adjust them like a TV cable on a GM?
Chances are the transmission is an A4LD. Not one of fords better transmissions. It has been my experience that they are prone to failure. If there is already an issue with it plan on replacement or rebuilding it. This is not something you can put a "band aid" on for a quick fix.
Many shops offer what is called a transmission fluid exchange. This can be a good thing when done on a regular basis. But when it's done to fix a slippage issue or a transmission performance issue, it is just the opposite. By the time there is an issue doing a fluid exchange only makes things worse. Not sure if this is what was done, but if it is , you're in for some trouble.
I don't mean to be the one giving you the bad news. Better you know the things up front, then find out later.
Thanks for the info. I figured I would be rebuilding it anyway but I was curious about the whole adjustment thing. I was wondering how full of crap they were? I'm going to find out what they actually did to the tranny before I get too far. Adjusting the TV cable on a GM makes the transmission go from feeling fried to barking gears.
Well, I got more info last night. The woman took it into the shop to have the Tranny lines dones. They charged her $500 to do the lines and change the modulator Valve(don't know why they changed it?). Bells and whistles went off in my head when she said that. I asked her if it shifted poorly before they changed it and she said no. The fluid is in great shape and it shifts fine with low throttle input. When you get on the gas the shifts are major soggy. I'm guessing they put the wrong modulator valve in or they put an adjustable one in and didn't adjust it properly. I'm picking it up this weekend so I'm going to rip into it and find out what they did. Looks like I'm going to get a crash course in A4LD repair haha.
