I have a 1999 EB Expedition. It has 75,9xx miles on it. I am starting to hear a new noise and it is a noise I have never heard on any other vehicle. After the engine is warmed up, sometimes when I am not on the throttle, I hear a sort of chirping noise, whether I am sitting at idle, or coasting. If I turn the wheel a little or step on the throttle a little, it goes away, but comes back again when engine is at idle. Any ideas/suggestions?
Ok. I will try that. Thanks. I will post again after I check those few things. I know that is not the AC/Heat. The first time I heard it, I turned off everything but could not figure out what it was. It is coming from the engine compartment somewhere. I will check.
Ok so if you are sure its from the engine compartment its probably related to the serpetine belt tensioners or one of the components driven by it. BE CAREFUL !! by the moving belt and FAN. You can sometimes use a tube and hold near your ear to amplify or zero in on a noise, like an old paper towel cardbord tube ( but its short ) or a length of 1.5 " PVC tube. With your ear listen on one end while you direct the other end towards components to zero in on the noise. Again be careful maybe have someone help or at least keep an eye on the tube end near the motor, you do not have to touch any parts just get near them and the noise should echo in the tube.
Look at your serpentine belt. Cracking is normal. I was getting some noise from that area, replaced the belt and the noise stopped. If it is original, you could replace it and keep the old one for a spare. Probably about $35.00 at NAPA.
I think the noise may be coming from either the serpentine belt, the tensioner assembly or the idler pulley. It goes to the dealership Friday to get checked out and fixed. I will post whatever news I have after that.
