My '68 has non power brakes and I noticed that the master cylinder was loose on the firewall but the bolts were as tight as I could make them. I put some washers behind the bolt head to take up the slack and that made the MC tight against the firewall, but now the brake pedal has no freeplay and the brakes stay engaged. I also tried bleeding the whole brake system and it still is the same and there is no way to adjust the pedal for more freeplay. There were only two pedal rods in the MC kit, one was really short and the other was long. I used the long which matched the one I removed. So what gives, is there supposed to be some kind of shim or something between the MC and the firewall?
inliner, either you have the wrong mc or a problem with the wrong rod length. There needs to be some free play. There are no shims that I know of between the mc and the firewall. It does sound like the rod is too long if everything else is correct.
How long has it been this way, did you change anything or did you buy it like this?
Your rod is to long. I just had this happen to mine when I installed a new master cylinder. I shortened mine 1/16in. at time until I got it right. Mine works fine now. Good luck
This happened when I changed the MC recently. My rod isn't of the threaded type and I don't think I can cut and weld it without messing it up. By the way, how do you remove the rod from the MC once it is assembled? I pulled on the old one as hard as I could and it wouldn't come out, and I couldn't get anything in the gap to press on that spring clip.
Inliner, Remove the m/c from the truck and you will have to remove that spring c clip. If you can put the m/c in a vise it makes it easier to hold. push the rod in a little and it takes spring pressure off the clip. There is a one way retainer behind the clip to hold the rod in the m/c. I had to do this about 5 times when shortening the rod in mine so it gets easier every time. I did not have the tool to remove the clip so I used a small punch that fit into one end of the clip and a small pair of needle nose pliers. Good luck and let us know how it turns out
