well i have the vibration in the wheel now, and at low speed i can feel the wheel going around through the brake pedal. Shop claims that the pads arn't even half worn yet so it must be the rotors. Do you think it would be wise to just have them turned and that should take care of the vibration? I'm not looking to put a lot of money into the truck right now since i'm in school and don't start up work for a few months.
In the spring i plan on replacing the rotors if they are still bad...what would you replace them with??? I've heard "power slot drilled" rotors or something along those lines. I do a lot of towing so i'd like to have good braking power. Thanks in advance
I have the same vibrations. It is the rotors. My pads are not even 1/2 worn either. I got two front rotors from NAPA for $220 for the pair. I got the better quality one. They sell OEM for $56 each or better quality for $110 or severy duty for $160 each. I rarely tow so I went with better quality.
I will tell you one thing. A impact wrench will never see my wheels again. Torque wrench only.
Just for kicks i took my truck to monro muffler/brake to see what they thought and i'm in need of all new rotor's and pads. They put together an estimate for me which included......
Front Pads Metallic $39.00 Labor $70.00 Total $109.99
Front Rotors $225.95 each Labor $9.60 Total $471.10
Total Front Brakes $581.09
Rear Pads Metallic $39.00 Labor $70.00 Total $109.99
Rear Rotors $$225.95 each Labor $9.60 Total $471.10
Total Rear Brakes $581.09
Grand Total $1162.18
The guy there told me not to use cermanic pads because they get hot and glaze when under a load which case the brakes to fail. Also said to change out the brake fluid when the brakes are changed. And that the rotors cannot be turned on a truck this size there manual said "non-serviceable". So i'm here debating on what i should do the pads are fine for now but will be destroyed after a while. They said they have to basically cut the rotor in half to get them off is this true? How hard is it to change the rotors and pads on this truck???
BS. It is very easy to change rotors on the front. Rears likely don't need it. Try taking the truck on about 8 increasingly harder stops from 60mph down to about 5-10 mph. At about stop # 4, you should be pressing the ability of the ABS. After stop #8, you should be able to smell the brakes. This may clear off some of the material that likes to pass from the pad to the rotor. It's worth a shot and it's free.
I only bought two(2) rear rotors and pads(Hawk) performance and shipping to my address in Chicago,IL
I am trying to sell them just to cover what I had to spend at the stealership for a rear brake job, they wouldn't cover the rear caliper, said I caused the damage from neglect.
I am going to do a front brake job soon and do it myself.
changing rotors/pads is a breeze on these trucks.... the rear rotors can be more difficult to get off due to the e-brake drum being built into the rotor. when you have it apart, check all of your calipers, make sure they move freely, and clean the slide pins real good. i always like to spend just a little extra money and get re-man calipers when i do a big brake job, since they come with pads anyhow. i have heard several sd owners say that their brake vibrations were from rear rotors... everyone always suspects the fronts to be bad and neglects the rears. i changed all rotors, pads, and calipers with napa's parts, and i am very happy with them. i did the whole job for under 700 dollars.
I know this threads old, I have an 03' the petal has bad vibrations all new rotors and re maned calipers front and rear and the trucks brake vibrates really badly. Also has new brake pads. Don't know what direction to go in now. Any help?
Yes a very old thread, is the vibration in your steering wheel or your butt when you apply your brakes? It could be your rotors still but not likely. What about you wheels are they balanced, maybe a little chopping?
vibration comes through the petal, i took it to a mechanic I know he drove it said there was something definitely wrong, I have a buddy who is a mechanic he can fix it for free if i tile a small powder room for him, its a good deal for me can't afford to put it in the shop right now. Mechanic told me to change both the front lines and take it from there, Ford wants 60 bucks a line.
I pulled the front right wheel off today, remind you I replaced the pads, rotors and calipers in the front and not the lines in JANUARY this year for pulling to the right! and...... the inside brake pad was at the metal of the pad, now I know why the truck was pulling to the right when I brake!! So the rotors are trash and the pads are too on both sides. I figured the lines collapsed. I called Ford and ordered 2 new lines for the front since I need to replace both sides. Heres the question..
Whos brakes to get Powerslot w/ hawk or OEM from Ford rotors and pads. Ford has em in stock now I can get em Powerslots I have to order along with Hawk pads. Which to get? Anyones input appreciated!!!
Which Hawk pads to get the towing ones (top of line) or mid grade pads?
