Fuel gage/sending unit
My fuel gauge mostly reads full on my '03 7.3L. Occasionally (more often lately) it will drop to empty while driving until I restart it, then it goes back to full.
How do I tell for sure it is a bad sending unit and not the gauge or anything else in between? I don't want to go through the trouble of dropping the tank if it's the gauge. Are these the typical signs of a bad sending unit?

The only way I know to test the sending unit is to ohms check it while actuating the float. Of course it needs to be on a bench for that.
Hopefully it is the sending unit as the gauge cluster is micropressor controlled...and probably pretty expensive.
