hi, i was hoping that someone here might beable to give me some suggestions. I have a '96 E-150 and the abs light comes on every so often. it has new brakes and they seem to work fine (it's also going in for new tires this week but that shouldn't have anything to do with this). the light is on sometimes right from the moment the van is started and other times not until after over a hundred miles on one trip. it has come on when the road were dry and when wet. This is the newest vehical i own by far and know nothing about abs so can anyone offer suggestions as to what could be wrong.
ABS problems with the mid 90's Fords are very common. My 95 E-350 does the same thing as yours as do lots of other people's. Issues range from a faulty pump, software malfunctions in the pump, but most commonly issues arising from one or more wheel sensors or tone rings. It takes only a very minor fault to set the ABS light. Things to check are sensor/tone ring gap. Any mis-alighnment, dirt or rust on the sensor or pickup. Chafed wires, or corrosion. Also inspect the tone rings carefully for hairline cracks which are hard to see but will set the light. Keep in mind that if there is a bad sensor it is wheel specific and not interchangable with other wheels. Get the sensor from ford not aftermarket. You can test the pump by hot wiring it also. If you hand the vehicle to Ford their gonna hand you a bill for $1000.00 for a new pump probably. Me, I just live with the light issue-truck stops just fine. Maybe I'll get into it in the spring but I wont pay $1000 for ABS Im gonna stick to old fashion brakes instead. good luck
I know this is an old posting but I had to make a comment. First I too prefer the non-ABS systems, my first instinct when I feel that ABS pulse is to let go of the brake - not good.
I have a 94 E-150 5.8L conversion with the intermittent ABS light. Ford says there are no codes but a $1200 pump replacement may fix it (just like stated above). I would love to ignore it (brakes work just fine and have for several years) but in Virginia it will not pass the state safety inspection. You cant pull the the bulb either - not coming on at start up also causes a failure. I just wait for one of those days when the light does not come one and take it in for inspection. - Just venting Thanks for viewing!
