just curious how the t-18 compares to an np435? can someone point me in the right direction to find tranny ratios for both plz. also like a link or somethin for axle codes. the ones ive found dont include a code of A9J (77 f-100) and my 79 f-150 has a code of 16 but the charts dont show it as LS and thats whats there. Any insight would be appreciated
The ratios varied by application. You will need to count teeth or rotate shafts to determine ratios. The transmissions were used in Dodge and International also. Those trucks are also old enough that there is no telling what might have been replaced or modified over the years. There is a decoder listed that works in the Read First: FAQ section
at the top of the 73-9 forum. An A9 is not a valid code for 1977 but an A3 or H9 would be. Both are limited slip and 4.11:1. Your door may have been changed also. The J part of the code just means power steering. Most repair manuals also list rating plate codes. There is also a good method to determine axle ratio listed in that same FAQ thread.

There are two T18's and both have a taller first gear than the NP435. The basic T18 is kinda a close ratio truck 4 speed.
thx for the responses. found a list and my (16) diff info. Still curious about durability comparisons between the T18 and NP435. Also rechecked the door tag on my 2whdr. (door tag and the tag on the door jam match up #wise for serial. this is how the tag reads-
They are both very strong. The NP435 has a lower 1st gear, as has been said. There were a lot of applications for both transmissions. As Eric said, the truck is old enough that anything could have been done with it.
