Quick Question?

I am putting a aftermarket tach in my 95 f150 with a 4.9 I6 5spd and im wondering what the red line is on the factory tachs.

I'd set it at around 4500. That's where my aftermarket redline is set. There isn't a "hard" redline on an i6 because it isn't an interference engine. I.E. you're not going to smack pistons into valves when you go through the redline. You should still not exceed the redline as the engine could fly apart with all the reciprocating mass, but I say set her at 4500 and shift her at 2000 to 2500.

There is no redline on the factory tach. There may be a rev limited set in the PCM, but I don't know what it is and I never bumped into it. Shifting the 300 past about 3500 is pointless anyway as torque production drops off right there.

my 87 I6 "redlines" at 5500. but dear god i would hate to ever do that to her, those things sound like theyre about to come apart at 4000...

yeah 4000 to 4500 and you aughta be fine. Andym knows these motors better than I do, HP might go up over 3500, which is why the "redline" was placed higher. The extra hp would be a selling point. I wouldn't suggest putting it that high.
