Battery/starting issues
I have a 90 Bronco XLT. I have had to jump the truck the past couple nights as it has not wanted to start. When I jump it I let it charge a couple minutes and then it would start right up. When driving, the voltmeter does show around 13 volts and it only dies if left overnight.
This morning I tried to start it and nothing so I put the charger on...nothing. I took it off, removed and cleaned the terminals and connectors, replaced them and nothing. Then I hit it with a 300 AMP quick start jump from the charger I have and it turned over VERY Slowly a couple times and went back to the dead battery clicking noises when I turned the key. Lastly the wierd thing is if I wire brush the positive terminal when it is connected all of a sudden I will get a little power while I am brushing (the light under the hood gooes on) and then when I stop it is dead.
Because it will not start with the 300 AMP start I am thinking this is not just the battery...or is it? any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
300A aint all that much the correct battery for your truck probably has like 900CCA.
I aint no expert, but it still sounds like a bad or corroded connection or terminal around the battery or the battery itself could be weak also????
Once I spent days trying to find why my LTD wouldn't start (everything tested OK) until I decided to bite the bullet and replace all cables. (I was a poor student at that time, so blind replacement was the very last option) It turned out that the cable from the relay to the starter was bad, but when measured with a DVM, it appeared identical to a good one. Of course, a DVM uses maybe 1 mA vs. a few hundred Amps by the starter.
