I have a superchips tuner. I sent them an e-mail asking just that question. I was told that I should return my truck to the stock tuning for the test but not to worry about unhooking the batteries to remove any memory of the tuner. I asked them this question because I believe that on my 02 250 psd they will plug into my computer. Hope this helps.
I plan to test with it installed, like I said, should be just reading the output from the o2 sensors, if your check engine light isn't on indicating a problem, shouldn't have any issues with passing. Our 90 Caprice is running a cop ECM and non street legal chip, passes with flying colors every year.
I remember one year in California I had a high-milage engine in a jap truck that didn't pass. For whatever reason, the smog tech told me to turn on the headlights, and dang if it didn't make it pass...
To this day I don't know what the deal was with that.
I don't know. It was reading something out of spec on the sniffer in the off-idle range, and the guy told me to hit the high beams. I'm assuming it loaded the alternator, and caused some HP to be used, or the engine slowed enough to burn whatever fuel was showing up on the reading.
I JUST DON'T KNOW...
But the guy was a Phillipino, and made more money when things passed than when they failed.... Friggin' genius, if you ask me!
I suppose leaving the A/C running full blast might do even more.
Then break it in. Have the car do a 2 hour idle in drive way then 3 hour load time. and do it all again the next day. You will get the time and then change the oil and take her down there.
One other question that I have been wondering about along these lines:
Are vehicles tested based on the year of vehicle prodution or engine production. I have heard horror stories of some state governments going after streetrodders that have later model engines in pre-emmisions regulations. I would leave my YBlock in my 54 F100 and live with it if I had to deal with that.
