i want to convert my 1970 f-100 4x4 to power steering. so far ive been led to believe the power steering box from a 1967-72 will bolt right up. i dont know if the donor needs to be another f100 or if f250 or 350 is all the same when it comes to power steering boxes. i sure would apreciate any info or advise you can give me. thanks.
Ford did not make a power steering box for the 4x4s. Alot guys use the power steering box off the 2 wheel drives. I'm sure some one will be along shortly with a link to the article.
There are "bolt on" kits that are like $1000 on Ebay. There are no individual ps gearboxes that will bolt on and work. You have to modify something in order to get it to work. Some people are using a toyota ps box, others have reworked a 73-79 f150/f250/f350 to turn in the correct directions when you turn your wheel. Otherwise you will have to cut and paste and make your own setup. Good luck.
I have an Ibeling kit in my 71F1004x4, works awesome. It was about $650 back in 1998. It uses a 69/79 F1502wd box. I steer 36" swampers at a dead stop with one finger.
I got one of those $1,000 kits from a guy in Washington off the internet. Came with everything including a saginaw PS pump with bracketry. Had to drill a little here and cut a little there, but there were templates for everything. At the same time I converted to hydraboost brakes. The advantage over going to the junk yard and getting a box with 100,00 is the steering box is new. Steering is great the brakes are amazing.
cmead1985 look in the tech articles on this site, there is an article on how to power steer your truck in the steering and suspension section. If you have any questions feel free to ask for help,I wrote it.Have fun.
