Get your codes read. Mine started blinking when the torque converter started going south. The hard shift is usually "limp mode". Your tranny will go into a safe mode (hard shifts) to help keep temps down and hopefully stop any further damage.
Many things can cause your blinking light. No way to really tell without the codes.

Mine was doing the same thing. The dealership pulled the codes and wanted to replace the injection drive module and the main computer. I told them I would think about it, took it home and changed the fuel filter and the oil and filter. No problems since. Coincidence maybe but that was six months ago.

The blinking light means that the computer has/is picking up a fault somewhere in the transmission. The hard shift is exactly what mjwhip described. Depending on the circumstances, when the computer senses a fault it boosts the pump pressure to prevent slippage and give you time to get to a repair shop. Definately have the codes read before you get strandes somewhere. Also, since the light blinks intermittently, it very likely means an intermittent code. Check the wiring harnes on the transmission, starting from where it plugs into the tranny, all the way back to the next plug on the harness. These harnesses have a small reputation for going out from time to time. Check all the connections for good contact, and check the ground wire as well.

Mine was doing the same thing...intermittingly and I could erase the code to get the tranny to shift right, but wouldn't stay...sometimes it would be fine for 300 miles and then it would go off every ten miles. A regular reader might not read the codes, but mine was able to erase them. I took it to a tranny shop and they pulled the codes while I was there....might not like the answers you get.
In any case, you might end up with a new converter and a transgo kit....fingers crossed. Mine comes back tomorrow
