jump in mileage

Last Saturday I raised the rear end of my 98 EB 5.4 by adjusting the LLS sensor. I'm loving the new look. Anyway, I disconnected my battery while doing this due to instructions I read on these forums. The next time I drove my truck I noticed that the mileage I had left on my quarter tank had almost doubled. Today, being payday, I filled my tank with gas and noticed that my mileage left in the tank was reading 800km. Wow! Everytime before this at full it read 500km. I am also reading about a 3 MPG increase. I reset the trip odometer after filling up and so far it seems to be accurate with the electronic display, actually moreso than before. I did install a K and N filter a week after buying this truck last november. Could the newly calibrated idle with the filter have caused any of this or is it simply that my idle may have been that out of wack. Anyone else experience anything like this?

I'm not sure about the mileage before the filter because I did that pretty much right away. I most often have the km remaining on my display because I find watching my mileage drives me nuts. However, the increase I stated was when I switch over to the average MPG after much driving. I used to get readings usually between 8 or 9. I know this is because I drive mostly city and these trucks just eat gas off the start. When I used to reset the display in the city while driving I would stabilize around 11 or 12 MPG and on the highway around 17 or 18. When I switch over now, where I used to see 8, is now over 11. I haven't played with these readings too much yet though because I have been so damned excited to see 300 extra km on my display.

Sender

Just a thought but how much did you change the rear leveling? Is the fuel sender sitting at a different angle?

I adjusted it as much as it would go. The result was that it raised enough that the space between the tire and fender matches the front. That was all I was hoping for cause I didn't like the saggy looking back end. I never thought about the sender, although of all the posts I have read I have not come across this before. I'm not sure if that explains my sudden change in mpg either.

I have had the same thing happen. After I changed a battery mine read 500 miles until empty and 16 MPG (city driving) and I never get more than 13. After about a quarter of a tank I noticed the miles til empty decreased twice as fast as actual. After I filled up it appeared to use the average to caculate miles til empty and it was my normal 390 or so.

The logic that determines the 'Distance to Empty' value resets to a default (Assumed) value for MPG after a PCM reset, which occurred when you disconnected the battery. Trust me, soon enough you'll be right back to where you were.

(I only get 312 miles to empty on a full tank.)
