Post 01' Extremely odd problem

I am looking for advice on an odd problem I have been having. I have an 01' F-250 SD 5.4L SuperCab 4x4. It has almost 110k. At low RPM's in high gears under no load the engine misses briefly, the check engine light comes on and the speedo drops to almost zero. The speedo then rebounds back to accurate speed immediately, the check engine light goes out after about 3 seconds and the headlights flicker quickly. All is then normal till the next time which could be 2 seconds later or 2 minutes later. It seems to be doing it alot more when the temperatures are warmer (50+) I have had it checked by my mechanic and he finds no codes to pinpoint the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like a sensor. Try another dealership where the tech is more experienced

Welcome to the site.

Rear diff speed sensor does some things like that..$20 and you can change it yourself.
But I would lean towards a bad cop, they cause skipping and some weird elect symptoms.

I had this problem in my 2000 F250 SB SC. I will have to do some looking to see what it was but I may have had something to do with my Diablo Chip that I had in it. It was almost like the truck completley shut down for a half a second - speedo to 0, CEL (check engine light), loss of power - dead. All in the space of half a second or so. The more I type, the more I think it was not related to the chip but like a bad solenoid or something in the ECM? I will have to see if I can dig up my file on that truck because I sold it. I do know this: the tech said he got lucky in diagnosing the problem because he couldn't reproduece the problem initally.

Let me check and I will post if I find anything on it. I have not had that truck for a year and a half.

I am almost always able to re-create the problem by just barely touching the accelerator. Some days it is terrrible while others it barely does it at all. Any more information would be greatly appreciated.

My first guess would be the vehicle speed sensor mentioned above... easy fix, 5 min or less. If it still did it after that, I'd bet you've got a bad COP

Let us know how it turns out

I ordered the speed sensor today ($29.00) and will try and replace it tomorrow to see what that does. If a COP is bad how can I tell which one?? If I had a check engine light that stayed on I would think there would be a code to say but the light does not stay on??!!

If the light comes on you should have a code but you need a good scanner and someone who knows how to use it.

Well....I finally fixed the problem tonight. I was not able to get a code to pinpoint the problem (did not want to pay Ford $70.00 just to tell me which COP was bad) so I bought one COP ($50.00) and started the process of elimination. I started with the passengers side rear and worked to the front. None of those seemed to be bad so I went to the driver side, again starting in the rear. Of course, Murphy's Law took over and the bad one was #5, the front driver side and the last one I tried. All totaled it only took me maybe 1 hour of wrench time (plus 8 test drives) and $50.00. Not too bad considering what it would have cost to just drop it off at the dealership and have them do it. They wanted $90.00 just for the COP, not to mention labor etc...!! Thanks alot to those that assisted. The site was a great help!!!!

Wish I had seen your post earlier. Could have saved you some effort. I had the same issue in December. I also have a brand new speed sensor that didn't help...good thing it was cheap and easy to install. I had the same symptoms. Some folks have the miss but not the speedo jump or the ABS light flashing like I had. Mine was #7 COP. There are enough folks on here having the same problem (with symptoms ranging from Tranny suspicions to speed sensor suspicions).....I'm trying to catch and help as many as I can. Trying to pass along what I learned on here to repay the info I received.

I had similar problems not too long ago with my truck with the OD light flashing AND the engine light flashing. Truck seemed to drive fine. I took it to the dealer and after 2 days of troubleshooting, they told me they couldn't figure out what the problem was. They were able to pull a DTC P0713 (TFT Sensor Circuit High Input), but when they reset the computer were unable to get it back. Their advice "Hope it never comes back or hope it breaks again in a big way before the 36K mile warranty is done"

The thing that had me scratching my head was the first time the light came on was when I first started my truck after it had been sitting (in the cold snow) for over 5 hours.

go figure!
