why does engine smoke when started?
Engine smokes when started only if its been sitting for a while if wait a minute or two it doesnt do it. and also when it's been sitting a day or two it wants to skip if you gas on it. but when its get warm it does fine 1974 360 with crane cams ignition conversion ixr?? something like that

Sound like valve guides are worn to me. Letting oil leak a little down into the cylinders while its sitting, then it burns off when you start it up. Thats what was wrong with my 302 years ago. Hope you get it figured out.

That situation reminds me of the worst car I ever owned, a 1987 Toyota Cressida straight six. They were famous for bad valve seals. It ran great and didn't smoke while driving down the road. Taking off after sitting at a red light, especially a long light was, however, a very different story. The car behind me would literally be encapsulated in smoke - nothing in the rear view but a huge amorphous cloud! The dirver always looked a little ticked upon emerging. Anyhow, my money's on valve seals.
