im a new bronco owner.. I just bought a 91 silver edition/351W..Great condition.. OK. I was testing out the 4x4 and now the 4x4 does not want to disengage.. i put the tranny in Neutral and press the 4x4 button but all it does is blink but it does not turn off the light stays lite... When i press the button i hear a click coming from the computer... I dont know what it might be as i said i am a new owner of a bronco... can it be the switch, the computer, the transfer case? any input is appreciated.. thank you in advance...
91' Bronco Silver Edition
351W
my 92 explorer had the same problem tried what bronco had stated and more never could get it out what I ended up doing was dropping the tranfercase moter all it took was 3 mins and right behid it is the switch marked and everything all i did was turn it to 2w drive and took it the shop the next day my problem was the transfere case motor itself all they did was take it apart cleaned and I was good to go
Mine had 150K miles of highway driving when I got it. I punched 4H button about 20 times, waited a couple of hours to let motor cool and did it again. On the third session it started working. Now I be sure to put it in 4L at least once a month. ...and back up to disengage. No problem for a couple of years now.
What you can do is have someone sit in the truck and push the 4H button while your tapping on the shift motor with a wrench or small hammer. Chances are what happened is the motors contacts got dirty or gummed up from it sitting so long without anyone using the transfer case.......that is just my first move just because its so common a problem.
Once you have it working as it should, just be sure to cycle the T-case through all three positions like once r twice a month to make sure it stays all limber and that!
Well i actually took it to an electician, and he said that it was probably the t-case..What do you all think? the motor looks brand new.. do you all still think it might be the motor? Well anyways i'll try that tapping to see it that works.. i'll let you all know..
would you happen to have any pics of the shifter motor? is it the one mounted on the t-case? it there any other way to get it out of 4x4? how bout if i take the motor off would that disengage the 4x4? or how bout the shifter gear on the t-case? i really dont know what im supposed to be looking at? if you have any pics on the shifter motor or any other things im supposed to be checking i would really appreciate it..thanks...how bout if i just disconnect the driveshaft for now? would that be ok or would it mess something up...
If you look at the back of the t-case to the left of the output for the rear drive shaft you will see the shift motor. If you remove it you will seen a mark that says 2w or something indicating two wheel. you would have to turn the rod to that position.
Once i do this and i reinstall the motor will the light have turned off? How do i know its the motor thats faulty? how can i check it?how much do those motors run? is it hard to switch the t-case back to 2wd manually or can i just do it by hand?
i can almost gurantee it's the motor that's faulty. if you take the motor off and put it back on that's not going to disengage the 4x4. and trust me, you're not gonna be able to turn that little **** on the t-case with your hand, you would have to use a tool, but that will probably only cause you to damage the **** that the motor turns. so I would take the motor off, disconnect it if possible and take it somewhere to be tested. it probably has to be cleaned because like you said it engaged the 4x4 but wouldnt go back to 2wd. i had the same problem in the explorer that I had.

Light will go out
You can test it
JBG $100 for the shift motor
You should be able to turn it back to 2WD with a pair of pliers while the trans is in PARK and E break on. If you search there are photos of what the back of the 1356 looks like with the motor removed and how the various positions are indicated on it.
Manually or by hand.......????? I dont understand.......you either remove the motor and turn the tab with pliers, or fix/replace the motor and do it electronically.....?
Did you even try tapping on the motor while pressing the button at the same time?????
what i meant was can you turn it off by hand once you take the motor off? or do you have to use pliers? sorry..is it really hard to turn it off...when i checked the comp on the inside of the front kick panel the light was off so i pressed the white button on it and the light turned on...when i pressed the 4x4 button the light on the comp turns back off.. what does that mean?
t67stang Like I stated before my 92 explorer has had the same problem being that I live in florida and work in construction sugar sand and a 5000lb truck do not mix well and I almost always need the four wheel drive to pull me out I have found that the motor on the back of the transfer case can become dirty and will cause it to lock in four wheeel drive
I have yet to have the problem of not being able to turn the switch behind the motor by hand but it can happen pliers will work just fine if it does not turn easily STOP dont force it you may have other problems .
in all respect I would just have the motor cleaned and see where it goes from there I myself have to clean mine every year but thats only because I am in fine sand and it gets into my motor
thanks i already got it to work.. acutually what i did was i took the motor off.. then i took it to get checked to see if it was working.. an elictician spliced the wires and checked it direct.. and it worked....so i really dont know why it wasnt working on the bronco? so anyways i put the motor back on the light was off but still engaged.. so what i did next was tried to push the button to see if it would disengage the t-case.. but again it did not do anything.. so i just connected some wires directly from the battery to the motor and it turned the motor.. so it might be the switch or the wiring? who knows but now i know that i can do it direct from the battery to the motor...thanks guys for all the info.. greatly appreciated...
