Anyone have any idea on how to keep cats out of my garbage cans and away from my house? Normally I wouldnt care about a stray here and there as long as they leave my stuff alone. The neighbors had a pet cat that our landlord found out about and instead of getting rid of it they just let it outside and kept it as an outside cat and the darn thing mated with the strays around here and now there is about 20 of them running around. I have tried spreading moth ***** around and cayenne pepper, I am trying to stay non lethel here but am starting to consider some lethel options, I cant just go outright and shoot them cause they would call the police and would know it was me cause they done caught me trying to run the blasted things over and they are pissed now cause their kids saw me try to do it and it the kids cat. It wasnt so bad at first like I said but these cats are tearing up the installation under my house and ripping my garbage apart and its really starting to light me up.
Sorry to hear about your problem. I don't know if this works, but it is worth a try. I have 3 cats and they all hate oranges. When I put the skin up to their nose they beat it.
I would try spraying orange juice(or any other citrus smell) around the house and garbage.
Hope this helps.
You can also contact your local animal control they should be able to help.
Maybe if they fine the landlord then they will take care of the problem for you.
Another vote for calling Animal Control. There are plenty of non-humane ways of dealing with them, but if Animal Control will take care of it(and they should), I think that is the better option.
Unfortunately if animal control or a neighbor catches you shooting or trapping one etc they can take you to court. It is best to just call animal control and let them do their job.
"Accidents" can still happen while their in the road. 10 points per cat. Winner takes home a case of whatever beer they prefer, paid for by the other contenders

As well noted, start with animal control. Sould this not produce the desired result in a timely manner and since these are strays, I'd suggest taking them for a "one way ride" to a new home location. Depending on the effectiveness of animal control in your area, self help may be the best option.
