stumped need help!!!

hi i am new here and hoping to find some help. i have a 2wd 2001 ford ranger v6 3.0,automatic, with around 69,000 miles on it. the problem is @ about 3500 rpm it cuts out, sometimes multiple times in a row, i changed fuel filter, and it kinda helped but not much. it isnt pulling any codes no check engine light nothing. it feels like it is trying to die. i changed the tranny fluid thinking that might be the problem but there was no metal in the pan. some ppl have suggested that it could be fuel starvation, is this possible? i really dont want it to be the tranny.
please tell me what u think is wrong. any help will be greatly appercaited.

welcome to the best source for fords and the coolest bunch of guys you'll ever meet (present company excluded) and now to the question.

By cut out I am thinking you mean shut down or stall. If that's the case then I'd look into your air intake first. It's easy to fix and you're not out a lot of time if I'm wrong here. You're losing air, fuel , or spark. I'm guessing fuel like your friends are, but we need to figure out why. I'm guessing fuel pump, but with that few miles it seems unlikely. if it happens when you have less than a 1/4 of a tank, than I'd say replace the pump. Other than I'd say try running a strong dose of fuel injector cleaner and switch fuel providers. (your current one might have a bit o' water in the tanks)

I'd try checking the fuel pressure. There is a Schraeder valve on the fuel rail; directions for checking pressure are in the Technical Information "sticky" (labeled read first) at the top of the Ranger forum.
Replacing parts without being sure they are the problem can get expensive, fast.

Well the fact that it hasn't set the CEL, would make me want to suspect maybe something like a power interrupt to the fuel pump.

Maybe a pesky fuel pump power relay in the underhood power distribution box, so try swapping it with a like relay, not needed to run the engine, say maybe the A/C power relay.

Or maybe a bad fuse connection, or maybe even the fuel pump inerita cutoff switch, in the cab, passenger side foot well just at the carpet line on the firewall. Check it's electrical connector & push the red reset button on top.

I aso had a similar sounding probem, on my then new 99 4.0L.

It would happen sporadically, but was worse in damp weather, or in rain & with the engine under load.

Turned out to be a #6 spark plug with a cracked external insulator.
Dealer found it with a wet down test.

Could be a loose plug wire, being blown around by the fan at higher RPM.
So check yours & make sure they're snapped on the plugs tight & on the coil pack too.

Just some more thoughts to ponder. Let us know what you find.

good idea johndeere, I shoulda thought of that. The only thing that I've seen that wouldn't be easily tested is an overheat kill function of fuel pumps. Starts cutting out when bearings get worn and there isn't much fuel in the tank t cool the pump down. That's why I mentioned it, but again, that should't happen for about a hundred thousand miles, so maybe I shoulda shut up. (now you get the present company excluded deal) A cheap thing to do if it hasn't been done yet is replacing the plugs. This is something that would likely be worn at this point, and it wouldn't cost too much to do. Get wires with the plugs if you do. I know my dad's truck starts to spark knock when the gap get's open. if yours have gone 69k without replacement, cutout could be a problem.

Seems like the consensus is that it isn't the tranny though.
