Recently had all new COPS, boots and spark plugs installed, it was doing it before they were changed out. When it's running the exhaust smells like it is getting to much gas. Like the old carberated engines used to do when the carbs went bad, the exhaust kinda burns the eyes when you walk by. It is running a little rough and is burning gas like I'm pulling a anchor. Any ideas?
if not then try making sure the light in the dash is working. It shoud briefly flash upon startup and shutdown.
If there's no code and still the rich condition then the only thing I can think of is ignition control module. The only ignition I'm used to that's computer controlled is obd1 and it won't throw a code with a bad module. Mine went bad and I nearly went crazy tring to find the miss. Finally had a guy tell me about the module and after replacement it ran great. Not sure to what extent your computer is wired into the ignition. There would be a distinct miss if it was bad though. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the response. The Check engine light is lit, continuously. Just started that. The biggest problem I have is that I am not going back to the local dealer and the next one is a ways a way. Maybe I can find a shop with a computer that will work.
nasdaqsam, it doesn't have to be a Ford dealer that scans it. Anybody with an OBDII scanner can do it. You can check it yourself if you have an OBDII scanner, which can be bought. There are some auto parts stores that scan it for free. Getting the definition of your check engine light will give you a big start on what your problem is.
Or Advanced Auto Parts, which is what I prefer since the Auto Zone around here has HORRIBLE people working for them, including the manager. Actually the Auto Zone around here can't even do OBDI cars anymore since they lost the connector and they gave me attitude when I asked to get a car with OBDI scanned. They said they can't do it because they don't have the adapter when I told them I got an even older vehicle tested there before. I hate Auto Zone because of those people and I am very biased. Sorry for the rant.
But referring to your problem, get it scanned first and go from there. It will be the most money saving way to do it since the test is free.
Make sure you get all the codes ,sometimes when they read the codes they give you the last one in the que or memory not the previous codes before it.
Meaning that the latest is not always the cause with OBDII

yeah and a scantool can be about 30 bucks if you wanna go that rout. one more vote for advanced auto, all the autozones I've been to have either incompetent eymployees or ones with horrible attitudes. Only wish that advanced has the rent a tool.
