I have a 1977 F-150 4x4. 351M/C-6 auto. I came across a tilt steering column out of a 1979 2WD. I have done the search on here. Found a lot the other way around, (4x4 to 2wd ), but thats it. How extensive are the modifications to put the 2wd column into my 4x4? Hopefully it will be about the same.
Thanks in advance for any response! Don
I put a 77 2WD 250 tilt in my 78 4X4 150 a few years ago and if I remember correctly it was a simple bolt in. However I would strongly recommend you check out the tilt unit and replace any warn parts on the bench before installation. Pay special attention to the two pins that are the "hinge" making sure they are secure and tight, the ratchet assembly that holds the angle of tilt and the bearing in the tilt head just down from the steering wheel.
Also prior to the tilt install I went to the local 4X4 parts shop and replaced the old steering shaft u-joint with a heavy duty Jeep unit that has a grease fitting. I can’t remember the details but it wasn’t expensive or tough to do.
Many people here are more qualified than I to advise you as to what to look for and how to rebuild if necessary.
Thanks for all the quick responses! Now all I have to do is find the time to go get it !!
Mil1ion: I hope that knuckle shaft is on the 4x4, right? If so, I am driving it so it should be there.
Thanks again!!! Don
