ecm for 4x4??

there is a silver metal box inside the rear compart right behind the drivers seat with a wiring harness going to it. I know this i a ecm of some sort but idk which it is. Ive heard that it is the ecm for rear abs from some people and for 4x4 from others. Now i can see abs having an ecm, but 4x4?? Why?? Why would 4x4 need an ecm, what is there to compute?? Isnt the 4x4 controlled by contacts near the electric shift motor to tell it when to stop and start, and a speed sensor so you dont blow the t case by shifting into low range at 10 or more mph. If this ecm is for 4x4 can someone explain why it needs one, becuase the 4x4 shift function seems simple enough to be done by contacts, switchs, and relays.

It is the RABS control module and that is all it is used for in the BII.
