Socket Set Organizer

Anyone know where i can get some kind of PORTABLE socket set organizer?

I havea fairly large craftsman socket set with 1/4, 3/8, 1/2" drive sockets...with metrics. It came in a big plastic black case with a slot for each of them. Now thats fine and good, but they dont fit snug in there and when you close the case and pick it up to move it, MOST of them end up strewn about inside, where i usually leave them until i reorganize them.

Does anyone make something that i can organize my sockets like the original one, except where they stay in place??

Moved to proper forum.

If you want to use the same case a TINY amount of expanding foam copuld be injected at a few points to make the case stiffer.

thats a good idea to get me by. Ideally, the identical case with posts that would actually GRAB the sockets would be nice....

if i had a big enough garage and a permanent home, i would get a drawer organizer for sockets...those are everywhere.

socket holder

Craftsman makes socket holders that work good for me, some of the ones I got are locking and I lay them in my field tool box with no problem. I think the new blow cases that the tools come in are junk and have moved back to using a steel hand box.

I had that problem, I just put a thin piece of cardboard in the case. I have some socket rails and other organizer stuff that I like made by Ernst MFG Co. And they are inexpensive and really cool. Even Stacy David uses them. heres a link

Maybe a magnet strip would work ? I like socket rails best for road boxes though. They are cheap and efficiant way to hold sockets.

How about gluing a piece of 1/2" or thicker Polly foam sheet similar to what they use in gun cases. that would be a cheap fix and keep the stuff in place.

I have the Lisle one. In the past I used the metal clip rail, but after a while the socles wear out. The Lisle one is magnetic, so you can take the full set to the job area with you. Handy when you don't know the exact size or metric or SAE. I have mine arranged by drive and then have the deepwells on one side and the regular ones on the other side. I also looked at the hansen trays, which looked nicer but lost the functionality of taking all of them under the vehicle. I often end up sliding the tray around and pushing the tray out when I am done and the magnets hold all the sockets in place. It also holds them firmly in the chest. Mine are all orange, but I understand they make two colors for metric and SAE.

maybe ill head to sears and check it out. The polyfoam thing may be best, then they can stay in their original box too.

I've used foam in the original plastic case with great results.

The other organizers mentioned are great, but I like the portability(and flat profile) the original case provides.

i use a rag

where the rag is hagin over just fold it in. the sockets wont move nice tight seal.
the rag doubles to clean your tool before you put them away!!
i like that polyfoam idea too!

I wouldn't use the rag, no offense 508. That's just because I like a coat of oil to help in rust prevention. I use the ones from sears. Their cheap, and they organize the sockets well. They're basically like the rail that there's a link to. If the clips wear out then you can buy new ones for a buck or two. My only complaint is with oily hands they can hold onto small sockets a little too well if you get my meaning. Other than that I love 'em.

i think the rag or foam would be best for me. All of my sockets get a coat of oil just from use. I really like to have them all together in one place, compact, and portable.
